Dr. Shefali Tsabary has been featured and interviewed by Oprah herself. This fact alone was enough to get me to log on to amazon and give it a go.
I was not disappointed. The Awakened Family goes against the grain of many parenting books that I’ve read. Dr. Shefali puts the parent in her (or his, of course) place, stressing that parenting struggles are always about the parent, never the child. She promotes respecting our children as our equals, rather than being dominant over them.
Dr. Shefali takes the reader through a series of myths that they, as parents, seem to settle into believing. These include: parenting is about the child, a successful child is ahead of the curve, good parents are naturals, and parents need to be in control. There are more…but you need some surprises, right?
She takes the reader through understanding why they react the way they do to moving to mindful presence with our children.
Dr. Shefali grew up in India and brings Eastern philosophies to Western culture. She denies neither and instead combines them. Rather than suggesting band-aid approaches to fixing parenting struggles, she dives to the source – the parent.
Go and get it. Ingest it and drink it up. I have a feeling you’ll like it as much as I do.
