I pulled out this deck of cards on a train ride with my kids. Trying to delay the inevitable “Can I watch something,” I whipped them out at the start of the ride. A new game, I said. We each chose a few cards and took turns asking each other the questions on the cards. Each card has a question that makes us think. For example:
-What makes you feel proud of yourself?
-What have you changed your mind about recently?
-What is one quality you look for in a friend?
-What new habit would you like to form?
Since the cards are the size and basic quantity of a regular set of playing cards, my kids went into this activity with positivity – this must be fun, they assumed. I have to admit that I was surprised at how much fun they did have with it. My usually skeptical preteen got right into it. My younger two didn’t want to stop, even when my steam ran low.
What I love about these cards – or at least one thing I love – is that I just stick them in my bag and forget about them until I need them. They’re small, easy to keep in there alongside the deodorant and hand sanitizer.
Because come on, if we can delay the inevitable screen time just a bit and actually talk to one another…well..everyone wins!
